The Appalachian Hardwood Research Center (West Virginia Code §5 24 5) is located at West Virginia University. The director of the Center is a member of the forestry faculty at West Virginia University.

The Center’s purposes and duties are to:

  1. Maintain an accessible, computerized inventory of scientific information related to Appalachian hardwood species, including silviculture, management, products, and product development.

  2. Initiate applied and basic research, including projects requested by partners, that support forestry economic development in West Virginia, including the development of new products and improved use of low grade hardwoods.

  3. Encourage the development of research needed by the forest industry of the state.
